How I Got My Start With Coolio:: Patrick OBrien comes from a musical family. Started out playing drums for Coolio at the age of 15. Went on to work in an Apple Store. Never really thought about songwriting and production.
Tim and Danny:: Shani Dawson is from Eritrea, in East Africa. His first cut was with an orchestra. It was his first introduction to the music industry. He says he had a passion for music and was stubborn to do anything else.
UK Hip Hop Producers on:: Music in the UK is just different than here. Theres a stylistic way of approaching a song thats UK. Its more kind of singer songwriter based. The biggest brand exported from the UK as a UK sound is James Blunt. How they work is all about getting the best out of these artists.
On Working With James On Goodbye:: With James, we started with a piano. It is really sitting down with a guitar or a piano and saying, right, stop worrying. How do you guys divide and conquer? I hate doing vocals. Its taken us ten years to figure out what were good at.
James Blunt Producing I Love You:: Its actually quite tidy. I mean, less is more and its just really finding places to put sounds in. The reason that he wanted to work with Sonny and I is because I think were cool and we bring a cool sound to what hes trying to do.
Mixing Beats: Sample & Splicing:: I was talking to McCall and Torchy about how important how important it is not to be afraid of using samples. Dont be afraid to just go through things. From the production side of things, its adding in little flavors here and there. And then you can really build up a track to sound incredible.
Maroon 5 on Working With Pharrell:: The thing is, were not trying to be anyone else but us. Pharrell had no resistance whatsoever. When were given ideas, its not like were hurting any egos. Its quite an open room. That type of resistance comes when theres a lack of openness in your mind.
How Adrenaline Was Made:: The title of the concept, it was Adrenaline. Was that like something that you kind of had on hand? Yeah, I had the method. I like to write down ideas on my notes of cool ideas to write about. Any production questions? Just a songwriting question.
Tom Morello on His Toms Splice:: Who has been your favorite artist to work with the art together or individually? I was just curious if you could go over how you did those Toms Splice. The thing is, its like hearing the potential of a sound.
Jesse & The Jesse Project::: Do you guys do any ordinary sampling? Yeah, definitely. The last couple of months for us and the Jesse Project has been sampling old records and again, just making them so different and unique. For me, I need to get this idea down now. Sonically and where things go is what I care about.
I Like A Bad Boy:: Weve been working with her for about a year and a half now, and this was the first single. It was actually her idea to sample this record. She was inspired by this genre of music, so it was up to us to turn this around and make it into a pop record.
Drum Beats by 808 Drum Lessons:: Where do you get your influence as a percussionist for these beats? They sound digital because Im a drummer. From the production side of things, its really important that this is a really simple session. Theres not a lot going on, but it bangs.
On Working With Nikki:: The original owners of the record have to sign off on any flips that you do. Did you have to get the song approved before getting Nicki Minaj verse? Yeah. So hopefully the next record that she cuts, dont know what it is, but were going to send it.
Using Splice in the UK:: Using Splice as a tool is really important. You can build a beat around Splice loops. The whole point is get good songs right in the shortest space of time. Just concentrate on the song and what gives you a vibe.
How Do You Make Your Kick Knock Like That?:: The sound choice is really important, but again, personally, Ive never really spent time really looking at what I can add onto the sounds I use to enhance those sounds. Mixing is not that long. Im making these beats so theres space for a song on.
