Diplo Mentor Session:: Watch Full Length Video
The First Step To Becoming A Pro DJ:: When I was younger, I just knew I wanted to make music. I got into production later because it felt like the logical next step. It took me until I was 25 to really give up all my work and be like, full time musician.
In the Elevator With Logic:: At the time I was using a program called Cool Edit Pro. It doesnt even have a timeline in a sequencer. That was my introduction to computers. When no ones teaching those programs, its really hard to learn.
Philly Mixtapes: Starting Out:: Soul Seek was the first underground music scene in Philadelphia. The group put together mixes of music from different genres. They were bootlegging mixtapes of their parties and made a lot of money. Do you remember when Soul Seek was first happening?
How To Make Your Own Songs:: Young producers in Philadelphia were making bootlegs of music. Now theyre releasing their own music with featured artists. How do you make the transition from making mixtapes to producing your own music?
Diplo: Working Solo Is the Best:: I think the independent spirit really helped me figure out that may be the happiest. Having control of what youre doing is the easiest. As opposed to when youre working with Rihanna or whatever, you have to make something as other for not only her label, but for her.
How To Make a Collaboration Album:: My job as the producer is to kind of gather the parts so everybody has a different quirky way to work Almost everything he's done, every collaboration has been a know. How do you fuse them together to make something new?
How To Get Your Music Out There:: Some of his biggest hits on Spotify are with unknown artists. Its an exciting time because its more of a level playing field now for young artists. You have to have records that have a story and have a feeling that young kids can get into.
Kali Yeluch on TikTok and the Future:: Do the technology and the platforms inspire or frustrate or basically change the way when you make your creative decisions? I want to make records I love, and if theyre great, something might happen with them. Kids do want to gravitate towards something that they really feel.
Demo: Im Always fascinated by Music:: Im always fascinated about human culture, like, whatever it is, like music. I love the way that cultures always fuse together and mutates and changes. Brazil is just so special because it has like, 40 different music scenes happening right now. I like to marry those things all the time.
How Much Preparing Do You Do For Your Set?:: I think it gives me a little bit of an edge on some other producers because I am always out there, he says. The older you get it's crazy, the better you get at DJing. You can be controversial as a DJ because you can make mistakes.
David and Tiesto on Their Lifes:: Theres another angle to the aging DJs that are still better than ever and bigger than ever. I want to play new things every week because things change. Its a good testing ground, but I do put a lot of work into my sets.
How do you keep the energy up to do all the things:: I think Ive taken a lot less gigs. This year probably was like last year, maybe 250. The travel does suck. But the richer you get, you do make it easier. You got to take care of your body 100%.
Enjoying Social Media:: DJ has learned how to be comfortable on social media and have fun with it. Doja cat is a perfect example of how to really run your Internet personality really well. Be very careful because if Im going to run for president one day, theres going to be some messed up stuff.
Being Yourself on Social Media:: The platform is just social media in general because you have the world now. Just being yourself is like the best way to do it, I think. If you do build something and its you, you might just blow up out of nowhere.
Morgan Wallen On Songwriting Advice:: You got to find a niche. Find something thats special about what you do. Work with as many people as possible if you just want to be a songwriter. The work for is the future. Being an artist is a huge step and its not that easy.
VST Sound Questions:: Colby uses serum because its the most basic. Hes always been a guy that uses raw audio more than anything. Whats great about Ableton is that time stretch. You can make almost anything out of that.
How Do You Keep Authenticity in Your Music?:: How do you maintain authenticity when trying to keep up making hit songs? I feel like sometimes people will lose their authenticity when they continue to try and make hits. But at the same time, I have the luxury of, like, DJing, so I can make money.
How Paper Planes Got Nominated for Record of the Year:: Paper Planes was nominated for Record of the Year. The song was mixed so terribly and has gunshots. The process of that song was just me in my earliest form of a producer. It took a long time for the song to get on the radio.
How Gorky Influenced Brazilian Funk Music:: Raph: When I first went to Brazil, the only music in funk was only getting played in Rio. Gorky is one of the most important producers in Brazil. As a gay Brazilian man, he understands the scene there. Brazil is the best place for music production.
What Keeps You Working?:: So what is your driving force that keeps you working every day? I dont really have another job. I just love music. Do you ever have self doubt? And if you do, how do you persevere through that?
What Sets Apart The Top Producers?:: Colby: I think a producer is a pretty arbitrary term. Theres people that are just technical that just work all day long. And theres people like me that are always on the left hand side trying to put the weirdest ideas together. Do you think the top producers share your love of culture?
Top 3 club records of all time:: Wes Anderson is an expert in the field of dance and club music. What are you working on now? Another country album, and then experimenting with just house music and house sounds. House music has a lot of room to grow in America.
